Fresh and Aged Pu erh Teas

During the ancient tea trade in Asia, traders on horseback began to notice on their long trips that the fresh leaves were aging nicely to enhance the flavors of their teas. Experts have since learned that a natural oxidation process was taking place, which created new and unique flavors. Like wine, the processing and storage methods of leaves vary from farmer to farmer, and in turn produce many different variations in taste & quality of Puerh teas.

  • Fresh Pu erh tea leaves have a natural, earthy flavor that not only gets better with each brew, but also with age.
  •

  • Aged Pu erh tea brews a darker color and loses its caffeine content in the natural aging process.

  •

  • Pu erh tea is unique in that the leaves can be brewed more than once. With each brew, the tea will fluctuate in flavor and become sweeter & sweeter. High quality Puerh tea leaves are typically brewed 20-30 times in the traditional method of multiple, very quick steepings.
  •

  • As the tea trade continued throughout Asia, traders began compressing their leaves into “tea cakes” for easier transport.
  •

  •
Pu erh tea is most commonly sold today in compressed, "tea cake" form, yet we offer Pu erh Tea Bags and loose leaf options as well!
  •

  • We offer both "Mini Tuo Cha" (individual serving, small sized tea cakes) and standard sized compressed tea cakes ranging from 357-400 grams (12-14 oz.)
  •

  • Using about 3-5 grams  (0.14 oz) per serving, one tea standard sized tea cake yields approximately 145 servings. Our high-quality leaves can be brewed 20-30 times depending on preference of strength & taste.
  •

  • With 20-30 brews of each serving, that’s 3,000 cups of tea from each cake, or approximately 1 cent per cup of tea! (Measurements based on a 5 fl. oz cup of tea)

*For those sensitive to caffeine, you are not limited to the caffeine-free aged/dark Pu erh. The natural caffeine in tea is released in the first part of the brewing process. Therefore you can de-caffeinate your tea by brewing your leaves as normal and simply discarding the first few brews.
